the old and the new
i was watching channel 5 just now. in the past, i never watched channel 5. i only watched channel 8 sometimes because of the drama serials, the other shows on both channels were really stale. then channel u and channel i came along, and it added some spark to my tv-viewing life. then i discovered jamie oliver, and it was a whole new watching experience that i cherished greatly. then came cable, and once again channel 5 went into disrepute as i watched my travel programmes avidly. but now as i start to watch channel 5 again (partly due to the singapore idol), i realise that the quality of shows and broadcasting in general have really improved tremendously.
until i saw, during a commercial break, that channel 5 was screening titanic AGAIN. you know, of all the good movies to show and even reshow, titanic, the show that most people are totally and utterly sick of, (due in part to the theme song i must add) is certainly not a wise choice. sigh. all the good work undone in 30 seconds. no one could have done a more brilliant job.
oh. as i was watching tv, the doorbell rang. i hate answering doorbells especially when i know no one is supposed to be calling on us, but this time, i had to, cuz no one was near the door. so i reluctantly popped my head out of my gate, and saw this guy, probably my age, trying to sell some ice cream. now normally i will just turn these people away, but it is really remarkable that someone my age was already trying so hard to make a living. he was really polite too. plus it was hot weather and my brother deserved a treat. so i bought quite a lot of ice creams from him. and then i saw him run along the corridor to a cart with ice cream which an older lady (i presume his mum) stood at. i thought it was really nice of him. i know i'd hate to sell something, i'd think it a loss of face, but here's a guy, no older than i am, helping his mother with her sales. it is really heart warming to remember that not only do ties of kinship still count a great deal, so too that people of my generation aren't lazy bums good only at spending or studying.
what a nice day indeed.
